About Leann

Leann J Edwards is a distinguished Victorian Aboriginal artist and author, whose work over the past 30 years has beautifully encapsulated the essence of her rich heritage. Born in 1962 on the Manatunga Mission in Robinvale, Victoria, Leann’s passion for Aboriginal art is deeply rooted in the traditions passed down from her mother, Margaret Rogers, and grandmother, Sylvia Kirby—both proud Aboriginal women. She is a proud descendant of the Wiradjuri and Yitha Yitha Nations of New South Wales, and the Mara clan of the Yolgnu people of the Northern Territory.

Leann's Style

Leann’s artistic repertoire is characterized by vibrant colors and intricate designs, offering a rich tapestry of Aboriginal culture and storytelling that makes each piece a unique experience for the viewer. Her profound sense of social justice and commitment to presenting the perspectives of Indigenous communities shine through her work, making her a compelling voice in the art world.

Educational Contributions

Leann has significantly impacted the educational landscape by painting murals at various schools, including a notable one dedicated to Fred Bull at Bairnsdale Primary School. In 2001, she participated in an artist exchange program at Ashiwi Elementary School in Zuni, New Mexico, and held a solo exhibition titled “The Kirby Women” at the Dreamtime Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This exhibition was a tribute to her grandmother Sylvia Kirby and her ten sisters, each painting narrating how these women touched her life.

Exploring New Mediums

In 1999, Leann expanded her artistic horizons at the Australian Print Workshop in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Her etchings from this period were acquired by the National Gallery of Australia and featured in the 2004 exhibition “Place Made: Australian Print Workshop.”

Community Engagement

Leann’s work often intersects with her involvement in Indigenous community projects. She leverages her skills as a dancer and educator to bring cultural awareness and artistic expression to various community initiatives.
